Archivers Asks for Holiday Customer Support – What Do You Think?

Send to Kindle

ARCHIVER’S scrapbooking chain sent out this e-mail recently. I’m not on their mailing list so I copied it from a posting online; I apologize for the lovely ‘chopped up’ quality :)

I’m on the West Coast and have never been to an Archiver’s, altough shopping there is on my Scrapbook Bucket List :) I’m rarely even in an LSS anymore – all of mine closed years ago – so the thought of being in a scrapbooking warehouse of sorts is pretty exciting! Alas, I’ll have to cross 2 large states to reach the closest one!

Archiver’s Locations:

But when added to their BANKRUPTCY NEWS from the recent past {where the irony of them shafting some of those small manufacturers they now propose to support has been mentioned} and now this e-mail, it’s starting to feel like another thing I’ll have to remove from the Bucket List as impossible {like seeing The Oprah Show in person, boo hoo}. In other words, I have to wonder: Will Archiver’s even be around by the time I can travel to one?

The message boards are blazing with reaction to the above Archiver’s e-mail. Here’s the gist of some of the comments, both good and bad:

- Archiver’s is clearly NOT a small business and trying to cast themselves as part of Small Business Saturday was tacky and unwarranted. While they ARE a small chain {33 stores} in comparison to big boxes MICHAELS {1000+ stores} and HOBBY LOBBY {800+ stores}, they do not meet the definition of a small business {25 locations or less; they missed it by 7}. Personally, I don’t read that they think they ARE a small biz, just that their continued existence helps to keep ‘small biz’ scrapbooking vendors alive. And that they are similar in many ways to a small business in that their home office and individual store staffs are relatively small. I was surprised to hear that only 30 home office employees run a chain of 33 stores; I had pictured a much bigger ‘corporate headquarters’ type of set-up.

- Archiver’s in the past seemed to be practicing “Goal: World Scrapbooking Domination”, putting stores in close proximity to local scrapbook stores {LSS’s}, which many feel was a targeted and successful attempt to shut the smaller stores down. So isn’t it ironic that they now would like to cast themselves as a ‘small business’ or small business supporter?

- Archiver’s has made other business mistakes – like employees who seem to lack scrapbooking knowledge or interest, installing Memory Labs in their stores which don’t seem overly popular, must’ve been hugely expensive, and take up lots of store space that used to hold product, etc. So to send this e-mail that seems to imply that it’s the customers’ faults that Archiver’s is struggling is like a slap in the face.

- Scrappers who do have Archiver’s stores nearby enjoy shopping there, feel they offer something special, and they try to support them with their dollars. Shoppers realize that if we as customers don’t show our support, i.e., spend our scrappy dollars there, we simply won’t have them as a choice eventually. And no one wants that :(

- The e-mail from Archiver’s didn’t bother some scrapbookers at all. They either found it harmless, just the truth being spoken, a necessary cry for help, etc.

Please remember, I stated these are not MY opinions per se, just a compilation of things I’ve seen expressed on the message boards.

Again, as someone who’s never shopped at Archiver’s, I can’t comment on their business practices, their employees, etc. But I can say that if I DID have an Archiver’s within driving distance, I would be there as much as possible. I do have other loyalties to keep with my scrapbooking dollar {as a MEMORY WORKS consultant since 2007, a lot of my dollars have gone there obviously … but they are closing effective 12-31-13} and other places I like to buy basics {Michaels, etc.}.

But I personally wouldn’t take offense to the Archiver’s e-mail. It would’ve opened my eyes to the dire straits they appear to be in, and would’ve renewed my interest in and commitment to shopping there. Hoping it wouldn’t be too little, too late for “us” to save them …

Are you an Archiver’s customer? What has been your experience with Archiver’s? Did the e-mail bother you or no? Do you think Archivers is on its way to closing down?

Even if you don’t have an Archivers close enough to shop at, I’d love to hear your opinions on this issue. Like THIS post I wrote a while back, scrapbooking stores, manufacturers, and customer support is an issue that’s going to keep coming up as more stores continue to fight to stay in business in these tough times … or give up when it’s no longer possible.

Do we as scrapbookers “owe” anything to these retailers? And if we don’t monetarily support them, are you okay if they close?

Scrapbook Products: “Timbergrove” by Fancy Pants

Send to Kindle

I just wanted to say: “Welcome back, Fancy Pants. Welcome back.”

I used to love FP back in the day. When I first started with MEMORY WORKS in 2007 and for a year or two thereafter, I used to lub me some Fancy Pants. They were one of my biggest selling brands.

Then I don’t know what happened but they fell off my radar. First off, I didn’t hear about them much anymore. Secondly, when I did come across a Fancy Pants line, I didn’t care for it. Too busy, too doodle-y, too much. Weird color combos, some kind of jarring. Just not my style anymore.

Then today I saw this: “Timbergrove” by Fancy Pants shipping November 2013 (!!)

And my FP love was restored. Like magic. Rich colors, simpler designs, no doodles, and a fresh look that I haven’t seen in any other Christmas line from 2013.

I didn’t link the images because they were so small when I tried. But do go look at the link above and see what I’ve fallen in love with. They also have a new line called “BELOVED” shipping December 2013 which doesn’t do much for me, but then I’m never much into Valentine’s lines. You?

What do you think? Had you lost the love for Fancy Pants only to discover it again? Or have you always like their lines?

Okay, this is going on my list for Scrapbook Santa!

Daily Grind Collage

My 5 favorite things about Simple Stories “Daily Grind”:

1. Bright primary colors combined with the warmth of dark wood is a great look. It somewhat reminds me of another favorite line, Glitz Design – Color Me Happy Collection

2. Versatile, daily use designs like calendar/dates, Instagram, phone, clock, house, hearts, and stars. And COFFEE!

3. The Simple Basics kit full of colorful chevrons and polka dots just makes me happy!

4. A new line of Sn@p! cards . . . can’t get enough of them.

5. That modern cursive font is one of my favorites.

Another similarity this line triggered for me was the translucent speech bubble images that reminds me of this:

Carta Bella “Hello Again” Chit Chat paper

I just ordered the collection pack of that Carta Bella “Hello Again” line … soooo pretty and pastel-y!

So what do you think of the Simple Stories “Daily Grind” line?

Simple Stories: Are the Chipboard Sn@p! 6×8 Albums Being Discontinued?

Send to Kindle

I think many of us have been asking ourselves this question, given that these albums have been showing up on clearance at Michaels, in kits, etc. When a product is discounted, it makes you wonder (fear!) that it’s end-of-the-line time for that product.

When this question was recently posted at Two Peas, I decided to contact LAYLE KONCAR, the marketing director for Simple Stories, and get an answer directly from her. Here was her answer: “We’re not phasing them out.”

YAYYY!!!! I know a lot of scrappers will be happy to hear that. While the new ‘leather’ 6×8 Sn@p! albums are lusciously wonderful (!) . . . {EEEE! Can you say “December Daily”??}

. . . the older version is special. The chipboard covers and cloth spines can be altered and customized to your heart’s content. Besides, I just love kraft <3

Here is what Layle posted to the Two Peas thread:

Hello ladies!

I’m the Marketing Director for Simple Stories. I assure you, we are NOT phasing out our SN@P! Binders; they continue to be one of our best selling products. You will continue to see us release products that coordinate the SN@P! Binders as well as our faux leather 6×8 and 12×12 albums. We have some SUPER fun things coming out at CHA related to the SN@P! Binders – stay tuned

Not only is Simple Stories NOT phasing out the Sn@p! binders, they are ADDING things related to them. Couldn’t be better news than that!

I’m a Memory Works Consultant (owned by the same family who owns Simple Stories), and we have the Sn@p! binders in stock RIGHT HERE . . . in case you can’t find the color you need elsewhere :) Please e-mail me with your order: scrapbookobsession(at)gmail(dot)com. I’ll send you a Paypal invoice lickety split and once paid, your Sn@p! binders {and maybe some other lovely products we carry like the new Sn@p! sets??} will be shipped directly to you within 1-2 business days.

It’s now in stock on my Memory Works website and I’m SO stoked! I was lucky enough to get a box of this pre-release so I can tell you first hand – it is aMAYzingly gorgeous and fun. You are going to love it. Or should I say {heart} it?

Once payment is received, I approve the order and it’s shipped straight to you from our home office in Utah within 1-2 business days. {Monday is a holiday so I would order today for maximum speed, lol}.

Memory Works: New Line by Simple Stories “I {Heart} Summer”

Send to Kindle

Have you heard about the latest line by SIMPLE STORIES!?!? It’s called “I {Heart} Summer” and it’s a new favorite! You can see the entire line HERE on the Simple Stories blog.

Here’s a layout **from the Simple Stories blog** to tease you:

Isn’t it lovely?

And did you know that Simple Stories has a new marketing director? It’s a name you may recognize from the scrapbooking industry: LAYLE KONCAR. {Pronounced like “Gail” with an “L”}

And she is ~ to quote the name of another SS line ~ AWESOME! I’ve seen her doing great outreach around the scrapbooking interwebs and I’m sure she’s doing more amazing things behind the scenes as well. For instance, check out THIS THREAD on the Two Peas message board. Isn’t that cool?

Speaking of how cool Layle is, look at what she sent me ~ a pre-release box of the new line, “I {Heart} Summer” !!!

IMG_1791

THANKS LAYLE and SIMPLE STORIES!!! You rawk. Srsly.

Isn’t that amazing!?!? I was so excited to see this line in person. Believe you me, I unwrapped and fondled every stinkin’ piece, LOL. Let’s just say there was a lot of paper sniffing goin’ on in the hizzy ;)

Recently, I was fittin’ to scrapbook some photos from a weekend we spent at the beach. I wanted to get the photos and journaling in an album while the amazing weekend was still fresh in my mind.

But once I heard this pretty box was on it’s way to me, I put that project on hold sista’! I didn’t think on the surface that this line would be perfect for beach photos. It brought to mind more summer, picnic, BBQ, fishing, and swimming pool pages like these:

***LAYOUTS COURTESY OF SIMPLE STORIES BLOG***

But when I took a closer look at it, I realized how perfect it is for my beach weekend photos. There are images of surfboards, beach umbrella, “Beach” sign, sailboat, anchor, flip flops, clouds, fishies, and lots of distressed, beachy-looking wood. I can’t wait to start scrapping!

So do you {heart} this new Simple Stories line as much as I do? What are your favorite pieces? Do you have any photos in mind to use it with? I would love to hear your project ideas :)

PS: This line ships to vendors the week of 05-20-13. Of course, I would be really honored if you’d order through my MEMORY WORKS SITE. Once it’s in stock, you can find it HERE. Thank *U*

Online Scrapbook Classes: “True Scrap 4″ Starts Tonight!!

Send to Kindle

It’s a great day in Scrapbook Land!

Not only did my SIMPLE STORIES SN@P ORDER arrive, but tonight the True Scrap 4 event kicks off with an online Pajama Party. TS4 attendees will gather in the web classroom to chat, get to know each other, ask questions, and make sure all the technical stuff works before class starts.

Lain {our fearless leader} also promises a BIG PRIZE tonight! She just sent out a list of all the prizes to be offered throughout the True Scrap 4 event and it’s amazing. Hope I win something!

If you haven’t signed up yet to join us and would like more info on True Scrap 4 – please CLICK HERE. Or if you’re ready to sign up, you can just click on that cute red superhero icon in my right sidebar … over there —>

Hope to see you in class! I’ll be posting class and event reviews here as much as I can. They will mostly be next week though as I have a busy weekend with family stuff. Every spare moment, I’ll either be taking TS4 classes . . . or fondling my Sn@p goodies ;)

One awesome thing about True Scrap 4 is that I’ll have “forever access” to the classes and can easily watch them whenever I have time . . . as many times as I want.

Another cool thing is that, if I’m not totally happy with the event, I can get a full refund if I notify Lain before the last class is over on Saturday. That makes me feel better – that I can get my $$ back if needed.

Except I’m pretty dang sure I’m gonna’ love it <3 Yay!!! Happy Scrappy Weekend!!!

Memory Works: Simple Stories “Sn@p!” . . . I Have Something to Show Yoooooo!!!

SIMPLE STORIES “SN@P!’ IS IN DA HAY-OWSE!!!!

Here’s what I saw when I opened up my lovely box from MEMORY WORKS:

And here is everything spread out on my desk:

I know the photo is so big it’s probably hanging over into the right sidebar. But I don’t care, LOL! I wanted to share a big photo of all this Snap goodness.

If you’d like to see a closer look at anything, please let me know :)

I’m going to use all of this for my Project Life in 2013. Seeing the colors in person has convinced me that it’s perfect and I made the right choice. It’s vibrant but not overly bright, a great mix of everyday colors that I know will look great with all my random photos, receipts, memorabilia, and journaling.

I’ve got a busy day working and full weekend. I can’t wait until I have some “me” time to just sit down and go through every stinkin’ sheet of this. Yummmmmmm!

Memory Works: Update on Simple Stories “Sn@p!” 6×8 Albums

Send to Kindle

OH SN@P!

Yesterday I inquired with Memory Works home office about when we could expect to get the Sn@p 6×8 albums in stock. Since Friday, I’ve had everything from the Sn@p! line EXCEPT the albums available on MY SITE. Here is the response I got, which they passed on from Simple Stories:

{SN@P! BINDER UPDATE}
From Simple Stories –

We wanted to inform our valued customers and retailers that unfortunately, upon our initial shipments we have found some quality issues in a batch of our albums and we are currently working on resolving the issue as soon as possible.

Please know that quality products are our highest priority, as we want only the best product represented for our stores, customers and Simple Stories. We are conducting quality checks on all our albums and once this is done we will resume shipping albums to our retailers.

We know you’re anticipating these new beautiful, colorful binders and we apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. We appreciate your support for our Simple Stories and SN@P! products – it gives us great pride to help play a role in documenting your important memories. A role we take very seriously – we thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter.

Thank you,
The Simple Stories Team

So it’s disappointing to have to wait longer but I’d rather wait and have a good quality product. It seems like these quality issues are happening in our industry lately – I wonder why?

Well, bummer!

Last Friday when all the other Sn@p! items appeared on my MW site, I went ahead and ordered most of it . . . except the albums and protectors. I have a big box of Sn@p goodness due to arrive today or tomorrow. I’ll post photos when it gets here!!

As for the Sn@p! albums, I don’t mind waiting a bit but I really hope I have at least 1 red one in time to start my first attempt at a DECEMBER DAILY. {{{Fingers crossed!}}} I’m using the Simple Stories “Sn@p!” line (with a WRMK 12×12 album and protectors) for my first recent attempt at Project Life/Project 365. At least I’ll have that stuff well in advance so I can get organized.

To my customers, I’m very sorry for the delay. I hope you’ll come back and order the albums through me when they become available :) Make sure you’re subscribed to my blog for updates. As soon as I have any news on the arrival of the Sn@p albums, I’ll post about it and you’ll get the news right away in your e-mail!

In the meantime . . . get some other Sn@p goodies to tide you over ;)

What do you think?

If you’d like to get your hands on summa’ this cute “Sn@p!” line, I’m taking PRE-ORDERS! It will be on my MEMORY WORKS SITE soon . . . so easy to get, just like any other online store :)

Simple Stories “Sn@p!” … NOW Taking Pre-Orders!

Send to Kindle

As I mentioned HERE, I just needed to confirm with MEMORY WORKS home office that we’re still expected to receive all the new Simple Stories “Sn@p!” lines the first week of October. As of yesterday, that was confirmed so I’m going to start taking pre-orders, yippee!

HERE is a cool blog entry I did that shows big pictures of ALL the “Sn@p!” items from all 3 lines – Core, Life, and Color Vibe. One big advantage to ordering Simple Stories products from me @ Memory Works – the company who started SIMPLE STORIES – is that we always have textured American Crafts cardstock and ribbon packs to match each line!

HERE is where you can see all of the Sn@p! items on my site with prices. {Other than the page protectors which are already available, Sn@p! items will show Out of Stock until around 10/05/12}.

If you place a pre-order now, please understand that I can’t promise when these items will be available; I can only go by the estimate the Memory Works gives me :) But when they ARE available, I’ll be posting here on my blog to let you know (so please Subscribe to my blog, and you’ll get an automatic e-mail). If you pay for a pre-order, that’s when you came back HERE to place your actual order. Sound good?

Here is how the pre-orders will work:

I’ll collect and process payments until the release date. When the kits and additional items become available, I’ll e-mail you with instructions on what to do then.

{Which will be to log into my Memory Works WEBSITE, place the pre-paid for items in your shopping cart, enter your shipping address, and submit your order. I will automatically be notified that your order has been placed and, instead of having to wait for your payment to be received, I’ll be able to approve your order for processing immediately … assuming your payment has been received and processed already}.

{But don’t worry about that part right now, LOL}.

To place your pre-order now, e-mail me at scrapbookobsession(at)gmail(dot)com. Please include:

1. Item(s) requested and cost
2. Shipping name/address including zip code
3. Total due including items, tax*, and shipping/handling**
4. Payment method – check, money order, or Paypal
~ I prefer Paypal, and will e-mail a Paypal invoice to you ASAP
~ If paying by check or money order, I’ll e-mail you back with my address. Please be aware that I can’t approve your order until the check/MO have been received and cleared.

* Sales tax amount is based on the tax rate for the address you’re shipping to. There is a really cool sales tax rate lookup and calculator HERE.

** Please see THIS post for information on Memory Works shipping costs.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns :) If you know of anyone who plans to order Simple Stories “Sn@p!” please send them my way!

*ETA 10/01/12: When I originally posted the prices here, they were taken from the wholesale catalog and reflected retail prices ending in “.99″. Now that the items are listed on my Memory Works website, I see that MW rounded the prices up a penny to end in “.00″ and I’ve updated them here accordingly – a minor change but I wanted to explain the edits I made to this blog entry. Thanks!

Without further adieu, here are pictures of the … SN@P! CORE COLLECTION … that I just listed above.

See what I mean? There’s A LOT! And that’s only the first of THREE “Sn@p!” collections arriving in October 2012.

“Wait. There’s more!”

Next we have the Sn@p! “Life” Collection, which consists of:

- Sn@p! Life Collection Kit, a 12×12 pack similar to all existing Simple Stories lines $21.00
- Sn@p! Life 6×6 Paper Pad $6.00
- Sn@p! Life Fundamental Cardstock Stickers, cute design icons $3.00
- Sn@p! Life Calendar Cardstock Stickers with months, days, and numbers $3.00
- Sn@p! Life Simple Basics Pack with {6} sheets of 12×12 double-sided cardstock in basic designs w/bingo cards $5.50
- Sn@p! Life Basics 6×6 Paper Pad $6.00
- Sn@p! Life Cardstock with {6} sheets of 12×12 double-sided designer cardstock $5.50
- Sn@p! Life Signature Elements, {6} sheets of cut-apart elements $6.00
- Sn@p! Life Flash Cards, {1} sheet of cut-apart 3×4 cards $1.00

Now it’s time for pictures of all the Sn@p! “Life” Collection just listed:

Last but not least, we have the Sn@p! “Color Vibe” Collection. It contains:

- Sn@p! “Color Vibe” Collection Kit including {18} sheets of 12×12 double-sided cardstock and journaling elements $16.00
- Sn@p! “Color Vibe” 6×6 Paper Pad, {36} sheets of 6×6 papers $6.00

Here is what the Sn@p! “Color Vibe” Collection looks like …

* I noticed that 2838 above is mislabeled. It says “Brown Dot/Stripe” but should be “Grey Dot/Stripe”.

Soooo … those are all 3 of the new Sn@p! collections that are coming your way in October 2012. See what I mean? It’s a HUGE line!

I was trying to think how to differentiate the 3 collections in my mind and here is what I came up with:

Sn@p! “Core” Collection: 6×8 album album and all the accessories
Sn@p! “Life” Collection: 12×12/divided protector scrapping; what Simple Stories lines traditionally contain
Sn@p! “Color Vibe” Collection: 6×6 and 12×12 papers in basic colors and patterns to support the other 2 lines

I’m so in love with this line and hope that you are too! I’ll be taking pre-orders; details on how to place your pre-order will be in another post.

What do you think of “Sn@p!”?

ETA 10/01/12: Okay, I updated a few other things above so that now this blog entry matches the descriptions and prices of what’s actually on my Memory Works shopping site. And here are 2 things that are exclusive to Memory Works consultants like me:

American Crafts Coordinating Cardstock Pack, {7} sheets of textured 12×12 cardstock pack in colors to match the “Sn@p!” line $3.75

Coordinating Ribbon Bundle, {5} color-coordinated polka dot ribbons $4.00

I’m now taking PRE-ORDERS until the line is in stock. Once you see it in stock HERE, no pre-order necessary. Just put it in your cart and order away :)
