Scrapbook Shopping: Michaels and Target with Some Good News, Bad News

I had a great day today, did you?! Just a lot of little things that added up to a very happy total. Love me some days like that.

First, it was Michaels . . .

I haven’t been going to Michaels all the time like I used to – a combination of being too busy and them rarely having anything new I want anyway. I read/watch all these things online about cool stuff but then rarely find them at my store. Sigh.

Today I decided to try anyway and did finally get lucky. I got two Hot Buy pads that I’ve been wanting.

Pink Paislee “Atlas” 12×12 Pad

IMG_0817

Sorry, my photos look a little bluish to me – do they to you? I took them in natural light so I’m not sure what happened. Speaking of color, look at the colors in my photo compared to 2 different images from Amazon:

Sheesh, between the 3 of them maybe you can figure out the actual colors, should you be interested in this product, LOL.

So I also got Shimelle “True Stories” 12×12 Pad

Here’s the back:

IMG_0819

WOOT! Yeppers, Scrappy was happy. So happy that I paid full price for one of them. I had a 40% off coupon but they weren’t on sale so . . . Since I’m at Mike’s rarely these days, I didn’t want to take the chance the one I waited to buy would be gone before I could get back.

Yeah, I’m a planner ahead-er like that ;)

Speaking of Amazon, they have the Shimelle paper pad for only $13.45 with free shipping. At Michaels it was $19.99 so had I known . . . I could’ve used the coupon on the Atlas pad and gotten the Shimelle online. Oh well. There is something to be said for instant gratification. In my case, I would say, “Instant Gratification, I like you more than almost anything!”

When Duty Calls

While I was at Michaels, I did my good deed for the day. Two beautiful 20-something girls were shopping near me in the scrapping aisles. One of them really wanted a 12×12 scrapbook but commented on the cost, and they were wondering out loud about coupons, then decided (I think) to pass. As I walked near them, I said, “You can pull one up on your phone for 40% off” and they thanked me :)

“Hey, just doin’ my job, ma’am. Scrapbook Obsession’s my name, and enabling is my game.” Then I made the little gun-finger thing and tipped up my imaginary hat. Okay, no, I really didn’t. Because that would’ve been weird. More weirder than giving unsolicited coupon advice to total strangers in Michaels. Heh.

Later, at Target . . .

I’d heard online that Target had some Heidi Swapp scrappy stuff so I jumped in my car, screeched out of my driveway, and . . . erm, I mean, I waited patiently until the next time I had to go to Target ANYWAY. Which just happened to be the next day (today) to replace one of our shower heads that broke. I am not even lying. It really just happened all by itself. Yep.

At Target, I did find these little ditties – some Heidi Swapp rub-ons and enamel hearts {on top of one of my fave papers from my new Shimelle “True Stories”}.

IMG_0820

If you slap a heart on something, I’m buying it. {Perhaps a little hearts obsessed, too?} I love the colors – navy, rose, and gold/beige. Well, I’m lying. I don’t like gold and will probably donate those hearts to someone who DOES love gold. Like every other scrapper on the planet EXCEPT me, judging by the gold running rampant in our industry for the past 2 years (but I’m not bitter).

And of course the SWAG rub-on I can use on a layout about all my SWAG from the Scrapbook Expo I went to recently. Or the way I have so much SWAG in the way I conduct myself in daily life. {If you knew me, you’d be laughing super hard right now about how true that is NOT}.

But really, I think I’ll use Atlas, True Stories, and the HS stuff in my “Week in the Life” project – are you doing it? The colors go great with everyday photos and there are some perfect sayings and patterns as well.

So here’s the good news / bad news part . . .

I was chatting up the checker at Target, like I do (except the one guy that scares me). I told her I was so glad to see some scrapbooking stuff there again. Then SHE said that Target is phasing out all scrapbooking AND craft stuff!

To my insta-frown, she quickly replied, “But it’s okay! A lot of it’s online now!” And in my “inside-my-head, don’t-you-dare-say-this-out-loud-Erika” voice, I said, “BUT!! If you purchase scrapbooking products online, you can’t as easily hide them from your husband among the blueberries and sunscreen and stuff! I’m sorry, it’s just not the same as in-store.” Plus there’s that whole instant gratification thing we were just talking about.

She offered me a Red Card and the conversation was over. I don’t know if what she said is true but I felt it was my scrapper’s duty to share this with you. I hope you’re taking it better than I am.

With that, I must now take to my bed. What started out as a fab day has turned somewhat traumatic. Plus it’s after 1am and I have an exciting conference call in the morning. I think we’re finding out the release date for Lisa Bearnson’s “Anthology” !!!

Scrapbook Obsession: Survey Time! Help ME Help YOU

Oh my gosh, I literally LOL when I even say that line in my head. It’s from one of my Top 10 Favorite Movies of All Time: Jerry Maguire. If you don’t know the scene I’m talking about, it’s HERE on YouTube. I’d embed the video here but I can’t find a good clear clip except the one I linked above that ends with Cuba’s naked bottom, LOL.

So I’ve been talking all summer about this supposed new membership site I’m going to start, right? Well, I want to be of service and offer things you need. So will you please help ME help YOU?

One of the first offerings of the membership is probably going to be a scrapbooking-related organization class. The plan (at least for now) is for it to drip out to members via e-mail once a week until we move through all the modules. The result: Your scrap space totally organized and useable through the cold winter months (prime time scrap time!).

scrappy jedi scrapbook space organized
Uh, NO! This is not my space. I wish. It’s Scrappy Jedi’s. I’ve tried to buy it from her but she won’t sell. Dang.

To help me best deliver what you need, please answer 2 questions:

1. Does this idea interest you, i.e., would this class entice you to join the Scrapbook Obsession Membership? (Assume the monthly cost is $10-20 and the class is included for free with a lot of other stuff). Be totally honest. If it doesn’t float your boat, no worries but let me know, k?

2. How many weeks would you want the class to run? Remember, we’re organizing your entire scrapbook space and will start somewhere around 08-31-15. For example, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks? Eight weeks would end before Halloween and 12 weeks would end before Thanksgiving. You’d have access to the content as long as you’re a member (or as long as you save the emails :D) if you fall behind or get busy.

Please, please, please answer these 2 questions in Comments below or shoot me an e-mail: erika(at)scrapbookobsession(dot)com

Thank you, Loves! <3

Team Lisa Bearnson: “Anthology” More Sneaks

We’re within 2-3 weeks of Anthology’s release, which is Lisa Bearnson’s new line with Youngevity/Heritage Makers.

I posted a couple sneak peeks HERE and will continue to post them periodically, with new ones scheduled to be released each Monday and Thursday until The Big Day.

Here are some collages of sneak peeks:

– The albums and cardstock I posted about before, along with a storage item from the Hangin’ Around card kit.

– More peeks of how kit items will be packaged and you can keep them stored on a bookshelf, if you wish. Regarding the folder, you can see a place to take notes as you work on your project – layout, photos to gather, photo sizes, special notes, etc.

A sneak of a layout kit along with a sketch. Anthology monthly kits will come pre-cut, packaged in a poly bag, and with a storage solution included as the packaging.

– A look at some of the embellishments that will come with kits along with a peek at the Anthology CEO bag (see more about CEO below).

“These cards are from the Hangin’ Around Card Kit, available in September . . . It has supplies to create 20 cards in a variety of styles (with multiples of each style), plus envelopes, foam squares, and more. Plus, many of the embellishments are self-adhesive and the card bases are sturdy like ones you’d buy from a store.”

YGY-LB SP3 cards

“The cards in this Make & Shake Card Kit are as fun to make as they are to give! This kit also makes 20 cards in several designs (with multiples of each design) and includes envelopes, foam squares, and more. And just like the Hangin’ Around card kit, you’ll find adhesive-backed embellishments and sturdy card bases.”

YGY-LB SP2 shaker cards

“As a side note, this kit is exclusive to the CEO kit so if you want to make and shake, you’ll need to buy the Anthology CEO kit! [That’s the big kit you purchase to be a CEO; it costs $499 but you receive a kit exceeding that in value which you can use for yourself, use as a demo, or re-sell for full retail and make a profit].

. . . Remember, you’re not seeing everything, just a little peek at what you’ll find in these kits. Also, there are limited quantities of each kit, so once they are gone, they likely won’t be ordered again, so make sure you order your favorites as soon as they are available.”

On the conference call I participated in, there was a Q&A panel where it was confirmed that the:
– cardstock is 12×12 (no 8.5 x 11)
– products are acid-free, lignin-free, buffered, and archival safe
– embellishment types will vary from kit to kit
– the kits will all be around the same price point

If you want to follow along on your own, make sure to check out the HERITAGE MAKERS blog and LISA BEARNSON‘s blog. Also, you can subscribe to this blog, join my free newsletter (both in the upper right sidebar), and follow me on TWITTER and PINTEREST.

I think what I’ll do is post on Twitter/Pinterest with the sneaks from Monday 08-03-15, then post them here along with Thursday’s on 08-06-15.

So far, I’m loving the clean look, bright but not too bright colors, and included storage solutions. What are YOUR thoughts on what you’re seeing of “Anthology”?

Team Lisa Bearnson: “Anthology” First Sneak Peeks Are Up!

If you’re a Scrapbook Obsession Newsletter subscriber, you’ve already heard that today is the day for sneak peeks of Lisa Bearnson’s new line called “Anthology.”

Time to See the Sneaks, Y’All

You can check them out HERE – then come right back, please :) I’ll wait patiently.
.
.
.
Okay, so what do you think so far? Pretty nice start, huh? These are basics we all need in our scrapbooking – luscious textured cardstock in 7 packs with 53 colors including neutrals – and D-ring binders – woot!

K.I.S.S.: Keep It Simple . . . Scrapper

I’m so excited about what I’ve seen so far. I know one of Lisa’s philosophies with her new line is to keep scrapbooking accessible and do-able. These basics go right along with that. Can’t wait to see more – which happens this Thursday 07-30-15 when Lisa reveals her next sneak peek. {How come every single time I type that, I write “sneek peak”??? Whyyyyy???}

Now that you’ve seen a little taste – if you think you’re going to like what Lisa will offer with Anthology, I really encourage you to sign up NOW as my Preferred Customer. Peeps like me will be the only way you can purchase Anthology products, because Lisa has signed an exclusive deal with a huge company called Youngevity. And I’m a rep, yo’.

Wanna’ Know How? It’s Super Easy (Not to Mention FREE)

Being a Preferred Customer is free and you’ll get 30% off retail of everything you purchase. You just sign up here: https://erikafriday.youngevity.com/

In the upper right, click Join, then Customer, and fill in the blanks. Easy peasy!

Note: Under “User name and distributor website URL”, please choose a user name – keeping in mind that if you ever become a Distributor, it’ll be your URL. For example, mine is ErikaFriday and my site is https://erikafriday.youngevity.com. You can choose your full name, your business name, or anything else you like. If you stay a Preferred Customer forever, it functions as your user name.

Also, please ensure it says at the bottom of the form: “You are signing up under Erika Friday (101433514).” That way, you’re enrolled as a Preferred Customer under my account.

Here’s a video showing how to create a Preferred Customer account (just watch the first minute or so).

If you decide later to become a distributor ($25) or a CEO ($500, on sale through 7/31 for $400 – but you still get $500 to spend!) – then you already have this account set up and ready to upgrade. If you always stay a Preferred Customer, that’s awesome! You’ll log into your own site (the one you created above) and place your orders whenever you like.

Here’s a quick video showing how to place orders as a Preferred Customer. (It shows health products in the video but it’ll work exactly the same way for the “Anthology” scrapbooking products).

Questions? Hit me up: erika@scrapbookobsession.com or hit Reply on any of my newsletters.

EARLY REVIEWS?

What are your thoughts on the sneak peeks of the Anthology line? Underwhelmed that they’re just basics? Scrappy happy to see things you know you’ll use? Wondering what could be coming next? Would love to hear what you think so far :)

See you Thursday, if not sooner (and this is where you say, “Not if I see you first!” bwahahahaha!).

Scrapbooking in the Media: “We Are Called to Rise” and the Importance of Memory Keeping

I like to take note when our lovely hobby is in movies, TV, books, on the news, etc. Scrapbookers, memorabilia, and memory keeping were mentioned in a novel I’m reading, “We Are Called to Rise” by Laura McBride.

we are called to rise novel laura mcbride

Okay, I’m already going on a tangent but I was so intrigued by the title. It’s based on a quote by Emily Dickinson:

We never know how high we are
Till we are called to rise;
And then, if we are true to plan,
Our statures touch the skies —

The English major (poetry) in me just loves that <3

Anyway, it’s a great read so far. It’s made up of the stories of several different people in Las Vegas whose lives intersect in the climax of the novel.

One of those characters is Avis, a 50-something mom who is on her own when her husband leaves her for a younger woman from his office. They end up selling their long-time home where they raised two children, a daughter they lost when she was a child and a son who is now struggling with PTSD after returning from military duty in the Middle East.

As she cleans out and packs up their home, struggling with what to keep and what to let go of, she says:

I’m not a scrapbooker, not somebody who tries to organize what I will remember. After all, there are a lot of years I want to forget. Nor did I want to shape something after it happened. I didn’t even like to write things in a baby book. It seemed like my interpretation of what had happened would get in the way of the actual experience. I wanted to remember things as they were, and not as I created them, by choosing certain photos, or saving certain items, or labeling certain moments.

Of course, I had that all backward. It turns out that most of what I remember are the things that accidentally did get labeled, or pulled out, or sorted. How is it possible that I can forget the dearest moments of my life? I never wanted to forget Nate’s first word, the silly tune Jim sang when he changed either baby’s diaper, the look of the sun glinting off the lake in Idaho. I never wanted to forget those things; I never thought I could forget those things. Turns out, forgetting is easy.

At least until I come across something that brings the memory back. A lopsided teacup from the pottery shop at the lake, an overheard melody that happens to be almost the same as Jim’s jingle, a baby repeating “ball” from a nearby grocery cart. Or this house. This house as I pack it up and decide what should be tossed, what should be given, what should be kept (pp. 156-157).

Do you ever think about what she says in the first paragraph? Whether as a scrapbooker you’re arranging your memories the way you want them at the time, or think you do? By writing memories down, especially right after they happened, are you creating the memory narrative (for you AND your family) or merely recording it?

In the second paragraph, I was happy to hear her say that she had it all wrong, that she wishes she would’ve recorded those memories – those ones that were so important at the time, she was sure she’d never forget them. That’s one of the main reasons I scrapbook – because I don’t have the greatest long-term (or even short-term, lol) memory. I’m not like Avis, where a random item or tune experienced out of context will unearth a concrete memory from my past.

If I didn’t record them – with photos, journaling, or memorabilia – those special memories would go *poof* into the ether, never to be seen again, at least by my conjuring them up. So I’m very grateful to have discovered scrapbooking fairly early in my adult life and to have recorded so many times that are special to me. I feel strongly that I *want to* and *must* remember these things. It’s important to me and important to my family.

A little bit later, she says:

So, damn, I do have to pack up this stuff. I do have to sort it all out: the precious from the unneeded from the still useful. What am I going to do with Nate’s baseball uniform from the seventh grade? Or the box of cards his first-grade class made for him when he broke his elbow? Or the plastic bracelet the hospital attached to Emily’s newborn wrist?

If I don’t save these things, I have lost something. It’s not just that objects release memories, it’s also that they keep them in check. As long as I have Emily’s plastic band, I know the actual diameter of her wrist, not the one I’ve come to imagine. Which doesn’t matter, except that somehow it does. If I just have this one life — if I made all these mistakes in it, felt all this joy and all this pain — I want to know what it was. I want to know what it really meant (p. 161).

Both sections were so beautifully written but I especially loved the last paragraph. Avis acknowledges that all these objects from her past that create a hassle for her to deal with in the midst of all her pain are also necessary to her life. They’re proof of the life she lives and help give meaning to it all.

What do you think? What did Avis say that you most identified with? I’d love to hear everyone’s deeper thoughts on these things we spend so much time doing – scrapbooking and memory keeping. Is your “why” inside Avis’s words – or somewhere else?

Scrapbook Challenge: Are You a List Luvah?? Have I Got a Project For You!

Are you a list maker?

As you know, I adore Layle Koncar and all her work for one of my fave brands, SIMPLE STORIES. So I follow her blog and saw THIS POST from her recently. Since April (2015), she’s been doing the “Listers Gotta’ List” challenge – which you can find out more about HERE.

Here’s a video Layle made of her Listers Gotta’ List album so far:

Okay, now you want to do this challenge, don’t you? Seeing her awesome little album sure made me want to jump in! I’ve been too busy with work and life to do much scrapping at home these days, but this seems like a do-able project. I know I can’t do a list per day like Layle does but even if I do 1 per week, I’d be getting something done, right? Maybe I can catch up on weekends.

“Listers Gotta’ List” Challenge

The challenge is totally FREE – although the organizer The Reset Girl does have kits for sale if you like right HERE :) Super cute.

So I just went and downloaded all the challenge files that have been posted so far, April through July 2015. Here’s what the first sheet looks like, to give you an idea:

April List_Headers_2015

I love the font she uses for the list titles. You can either print her titles out on stickers or re-write or re-format/print them yourself. The sky’s the limit, really. There are some lists I won’t do (Favorite Non-Planner Instagrammers, for instance) so I’m thinking about – for continuity sake – just using her master list each month, picking out the ones I want make lists of, and handwriting them myself.

Now for the format . . . hmmmm. What should I do?

Travel Planner?

I like the little travel planners that both The Reset Girl and Layle used. They’re slim, affordable, have a non-intimidating space to fill up, etc.

Project Life Style?

I’m also thinking about doing this using Project Life supplies. Lawdy knows, I have enough cards to use, LOL! . . . and page protectors . . . and albums, both 12×12 and 6×8. That would make it easy to include photos in with my lists. Oooh! Or maybe even use one of these Project Life slim mini albums. Say what? The Cherry album is only $4.43 on Amazon right now!

cherry project life mini album

Simple Stories Sn@p Album?

Mainly ‘cuz I have this gorgeous “I Am” line to use and this project seems perfect! A little birdie told me that Simple Stories has a new line coming out in the fall that matches “I Am” very nicely. So I can keep going with the look even when I go through my “I Am” supplies.

Decisions, Decisions!

Well, I’ll be thinking about how to approach this but I don’t want to think too long or I won’t start. Which approach would you choose?

Have you done a listing challenge before? I’ve seen others and they seem like so much fun. I’ve attempted them way in the past and never stuck with them, unfortunately. Maybe all the support for this one will keep me going. Are you going to try this one? If you do, let me know!

Scrapbook Obsession: Update 07-03-15

It’s Friday night of a holiday weekend and, yes, I’m working. Sigh. But I wanted to do a quick update and say HI.

HOLLAH!

So first of all . . . HIIIIIII!!!! I miss you. I hope you’re enjoying your summer and have fun plans for the 4th of July tomorrow (those of you in America). We’re keeping it low key as usual. I think being a 9-1-1 dispatcher all those years kinda’ soured me on going out for July 4th. Lotsa’ baaadd things happen – plus I feel sorry for my doggie, LOL. Fireworks aren’t allowed in most towns around here and, especially with the severe CA drought, we have to be so careful. Do you set off fireworks, go watch a fireworks show, or what?

Where You Been, Guuuurl?

I’m still doing behind the scenes stuff when I have time between working. Everything’s headed in the right direction, even if it doesn’t seem like it when it’s so quiet here, LOL. I’ll give some specifics in a newsletter soon so sign-up if you’re interested (in the top right sidebar). Why not just share everything here on the blog, you might ask? One thing I’m loving about the newsletter is that I can get more personal and share more ‘real life’ details. Because I’m writing directly to you and just you, not to the whole world wide web. Does that make sense?

Team Lisa’s (Un)Official Song: “This is My Fight Song”

One exciting thing is that we’re gearing up big time for Lisa Bearnson’s new line, Anthology, that’s coming out later this summer.

lisa bearnson anthology

It’s getting closer and closer! If you’ve thought about – or want to know about – being a rep for her products, e-mail me, k? (address is below). The way to go BIG TIME with it is to become a CEO like I did. When I signed up in May, it cost me $500 (I’ve already made $100 of that back with very minimal work, btw). Lucky you, until 07-31-15 it’s $100 off – and you get all the same stuff I did! I’m not bitter or anything. I’m happy for you. R-E-A-L-L-Y! But seriously if you decide to do it or are just curious, please contact me. I’ll answer any questions and tell you how to sign up so I get credit and you’re on MY team! I want you to myself, girlie.

Noted: My New E-mail Address

Check it out . . . my new email is: erika@scrapbookobsession.com!

In business school this Spring, one thing I learned is that a biz lady looks more professional if she ditches the gmail address (I’ve always used scrapbookobsession@gmail.com) and gets one related to her domain. Always Sometimes one to follow directions, I did just that :) Now I’m all pro-like and stuff :P

Aw, Time to Go :(

In closing, I just wanted to say thank you to Ashley for becoming the 120th subscriber to the Scrapbook Obsession Free Newsletter! Love hitting those “tens” milestones and welcoming more peeps to the family.

PS:

I can’t leave you without sharing something scrappy so go get your FREE June 2015 printables from Simple Stories RIGHT HERE! Warning – the blog entry they’re a part of deals with loss and is sad so if you’re not feelin’ it right now, just go straight HERE.

Love you, luvs!

Scrapbook Obsession Blog: Newsletter Update

What’s the saying . . . better late than never?

Yeah, that would be me. After all my excitement about reaching 100 subscribers for my new free newsletter in May 2015, I followed it up immediately with !!! A bunch of nothin’.

My sad story is that my work website was hacked so, while doing my usual freelance work gigs and starting a new one, I had to deal with that whole mess. Aye yie yie. However, I have a fabulous web host and all is right with the world again – with even more precautions in place.

So then what happened?

Well, today I finally had time to finish the Welcome to the Newsletter e-mail for all the lovely subscribers AND figure out how to send it … uh, kinda’ backdated … to everyone who signed up. Feels so good to have that signed, sealed, and delivered.

Annnnd what’s next?

I’m nervous, that’s what. What do I send out first? What if I have typos? What if y’all don’t like it? Just being honest – it’s nerve-wracking for a non-pro like me.

Then God spoke to me . . .

Well, sorta’. I get a daily e-mail and this is what today’s said:

On this day of your life,
Erika, I believe God wants you to know…

…that the next step is the most important step. Take it
now. Do not wait.

Life is not going to come down there and sprinkle
glitter dust on your shoulders to let you know that you
are Good…or that you are walking the Right Path…or
that you are making the Best Decision.

Take the next step. Right now. Stop waiting for a “sign”
from the “gods.” Your sign is your intuition, wrapped
in your desire.

Hesitation is not a stopping place on the road to heaven.

And since I always listen to God when he takes the time to speak to me, BLADOW! Another newsletter will go out soon. I have a cool coupon code lined up for you on a brand new product by someone you lurve. It won’t be posted on the blog so – if you want it – you gotta’ get the newsletter, chick!

PS: I have to say I *am* disappointed there will be no glitter dust sprinkles. Shoot.  I was looking forward to those.

Where, oh, where is that sign-up form?!?!

Oh, HELLO.

Online Scrapbook Classes: “True Scrap 2” is Being Retired 05-31-15

So this weekend is your last chance to grab it!

TRUE SCRAP 2 is the second in a very successful series of online scrapbooking events held by Lain Ehmann.

Miss Lain says …

This event, from October 2011, includes an incredible lineup of
classes from papercrafting luminaries such as:

-Jennifer McGuire
-Nic Howard
-Shimelle Laine
…and a dozen more!

Over 20 hours of video instruction all at a very special price.

Here’s the scoop:
-True Scrap II classes will no longer be for sale after May 31,
2015.
-They can be purchased in a bundle for only $47.

In addition to all the cool classes, there are virtual make-n-takes with Maggie Holmes & Kelley Purkey – and a fun interview with Cathy Zielske. Love them!

For the scrappy business-minded like me, check this out:

All this for over $100 off the original price. I think I’m going to get this one! You?

You can get all the details here.

Scrapbook Obsession Blog: The Big Announcement!

If you’re in a hurry today, please scroll to the bottom . . . PRIZES! If you’re ready to settle in for a long read, get on with your bad self.

Thuh Announcement

As I talked about in THIS post . . . after writing this blog for 8 years, I’ve decided it’s time to take it to the next level. And what better time to make the announcement and share my over-the-top excitement than on interNational Scrapbook Day?!?

So what I’ve been wanting to tell you is:

– Scrapbook Obsession Blog will continue providing scrapbook industry news and gossip, enabling, Deals & Steals, etc. but will be more active, with posts more often!

– A NEW free Scrapbook Obsession Newsletter will be delivered to your inbox with special deals, fun stuff that won’t be on the blog, and all the news that’s fit to print (and maybe some that’s not? heh).

– There will be two NEW Scrapbook Obsession Memberships, both Free and Paid, where (depending on your level) you can enjoy things like exclusive content, a members forum and community, free and paid classes, interviews with people YOU want to hear from, and more! As a Paid Member, you’ll have some pretty special perks that I know you’re going to love.

– And, finally, did you notice the new item in the right sidebar? -> It’s a Pinterest board highlighting a new site I’ve started called “Organized Scrapbooking” where you can be inspired by organized crafting & scrapping spaces, research how to organize specific crafting items, receive special offers, and then some. (Sorry, I didn’t want to say “and more!” again). If nothing else, go visit it today and see the Papermint entry; it will blow. your mind.

How About Some Background?

As I mentioned in the other post, I’ve been wanting to elevate things around here for a long time. I’ve recently been blessed by the most amazing experience: I attended on online business school called “Marie Forleo’s B School.” I was taught how to be a responsible and resourceful online entrepreneur.

I learned that you need to ‘start the right business’ and, as I completed the exercises in that module, I took ownership of the fact that I want to devote my time and resources to this industry and hobby that I love so much: scrapbooking. There’s no reason to start a business from scratch when I already have everything I want and need to get started right here :)

Is it crazy to start a business around the (ahem, declining) scrapbooking industry? Some might say! {Not that I care about the Negative Nellies. Do you?} But I have faith that there are still tons of obsessed scrapbookers out there who want to talk and learn about their beloved hobby, and new scrapbookers who will find their way to us if we provide what they need.

So that’s what I’m going to do. I’m so excited and hope you are, too!

Idea Overload

During the 8-week course of business school, I couldn’t stop the ideas from forming … oh, the things I want to share with you! It’s just massive, peeps. In fact, I had to start using a task manager called Things for Mac to keep track of all the ideas flying out of my head (well, there’s a visual!).

I want to be the first place you visit when you think of scrapbooking. I want to create classes you need but can’t find elsewhere, provide a community where you feel completely at home, and make a difference in the scrapbooking industry. We’re going to have so much fun! One thing that won’t change is my wish to make you laugh. Like, ’til you snork coffee out your nose and your dog looks at you like, “Guuurrrl. What is UP with YOU?”. Ohhh . . . is it only my mine that gives the doggy evil eye? Hmm.

What’s Next?

I’ve found an amazing online platform with which to provide you all this content. It’ll be hosted off-site but with super easy access and links from right here. Everything will originate from that one place – the newsletter, classes, membership site, forum, etc. – so I’m hoping that’ll cut down/eliminate any technical snafus that can happen when you kind of piecemeal all these things together electronically. Speaking of technical snaufus, this site was down for 2 days this week (did ya’ miss me?) because a plug-in I wanted to try wasn’t playing nice with WordPress (the blogging software). That’s the kind of stuff I have ZERO talent or patience for, so I think it’s best to host all the new shizzle off-site.

If you want to play along – in any capacity – your first step would be to sign up for the Free Newsletter. I want to keep Scrapbook Obsession Blog pretty much as it is and not flood it with that content, which is separate and different (in a good way, promise!). The newsletter is how I’ll keep you up-to-date on all the haps and stuff. I would never dream of selling your e-mail address (just so ya’ know!); I appreciate the trust you show when you share it with me too much. Besides, I like the idea of talking directly to you – and I encourage you to write me back. Ooooh, that way we can be SBFF’s and have SECRETS!! LOL

To you lovelies who already get my blog entries via e-mail, the newsletter is something NEW and you’ll need to sign up for it separately, please.

Did somebody say PRIZES?

Sign up for the free Scrapbook Obsession Newsletter by Sunday night and I’ll pick 3 lucky scrappers to receive a $10 gift card of their choice! Amazon, Starbucks, Target, Michaels, or any store you like – as long as I can find the card locally and mail it to ya’, or I can purchase it online for you. Even your local scrapbook store if you like! You must sign up for the newsletter by Sunday 05-03-15 at midnight PST. Winners will be announced – in said newsletter, ha! – within 1 week.

“I don’t know . . . I don’t think I want to sign up for a FREE newsletter AND get a chance to win $10 for anything I want.” Said nobody.

I’ll be rolling out the Free and Paid Membership programs soon! Updates will be in the Newsletter ;) Thank you for all the support you’ve given me in this new endeavor. I truly appreciate it!

{Inter} National Scrapbook Day 2015

I have something special of my own to announce on (Inter)National Scrapbook Day – Saturday, May 2, 2015 – so please stay tuned for that! I hope you’re gonna’ love it ❤️
{There will be chances to win prizes . . . is that enough to make you come back? Hee heeee}

Here’s a list of things going on around the interwebs this week and especially Saturday 05-02-15 in honor of I-NSD 2015:

BeckyHiggins.com

I’m on Becky’s email list and in her email of 04-27-15, she linked to a Youtube video where she tells of all the fun stuff going on at her site on Saturday 5/2. When I tried to share the video here on my blog, I got this message: “This video is unlisted. Be considerate and think twice before sharing.” So apparently I’m not supposed to share the video. Sorry, I’m not a rule breaker. Well, except for on my Junior Prom night but that’s another story*. Heh. Soooo – if you’re on Becky’s mailing list, get the linkee there, Google it up, or perhaps she’s putting it out on Facebook, etc. She did say that THE VIDEO is the ONLY place they’re posting online about WHAT EXACTLY will be happening Saturday. Take my word for it – you want to be there :)

*Oops! Mom? Are you out there? . . . . (crickets) . . . Phew! She doesn’t read my blog normally but I just had to make sure.

Online Scrapbook Classes: “Truth Scrap” Now Available ‘a la Carte’ & On Sale

As I talked about back in December 2014, Lain Ehman held a first-time online event called “TRUTH SCRAP” on 01-31-15.

It sounded like a very interesting and different event that I’m sorry I couldn’t attend live. Oh well, the next best thing is to get the classes after the fact. I like when they go on sale “a la carte” and know that you do too. We can handpick the classes we want or, in the case of the sale I’m going to tell you about, get all 7 classes for a great price.

Here are the classes you can choose from – or get them all & reduce the cost per class:

“Hope Notes: Creating and Sharing Messages of Faith” with Stephanie
Ackerman

“Faithbooking: How (and Why) to Share Your Faith in Your Scrapbook”
with Erin Bassett

“Words to Live By: A Handmade Art Journal” with Andrea Chebeleu

“#ARTWORSHIP: Art Journaling Response to Jesus” with Heather
Greenwood

“The Art of Being HUMAN: A Creative Exploration of Our Basic Being
and Purpose” with Liz Hicks

“Illuminated Manuscripts: Illustrating Your Journaling Bible” with
Shanna Noel

“Cross-ology: Art and Heart for the Home” with Donna Salazar

You can see full class descriptions on the “TRUTH SCRAP” site.

So here’s the sale info:

From Monday 04-13 through midnight on Friday 04-24-15, you can get each class individually for $9.95 or all 7 classes for $49 (aka $7/each). To get the $49 price, add all 7 classes to your cart, then use the code TRUTH at checkout through 4/24. The sale price of $9.95 per class is also good through 4/24.

The classes include both the project-only video (around 30 minutes) and the full, “Like You Were There” video (around 60 minutes).

***After 4/24, the price will increase to the regular $14.95 per class.

The 3 classes I’m considering are:

– Erin Bassett – Faithbooking: How (and Why) to Share Your Faith in Your Scrapbook

I keep saying I’m going to incorporate my faith into my scrapbooks but it rarely happens. Maybe this is the inspiration I need.

– Shanna Noel – Illuminated Manuscripts: Illustrating Your Journaling Bible

I heard about journaling your Bible in 2014, I think, and have been intrigued ever since.

– Donna Salazar – Cross-Ology: Art and Heart for the Home

I’ve always loved crosses and wear a small one around my neck 24/7 (it says “Blessed”). In fact, my dad had a crucifix collection which passed down to my brother and I when he died but they’re packed away for safekeeping. I’d love to incorporate some crosses into our home deco and it sounds like this class will share economical and fun ways to do that.

Which Truth Scrap classes most appeal to you?

Just to recap re: “TRUTH SCRAP”
-Individual classes are on sale 4/13 through 4/24 for $9.95.
-Special offer: Get all 7 class offerings for only $49 with code “TRUTH” from 4/13 through 4/24.

If you end up purchasing any classes, I’d love to hear what you chose and also to hear any reviews after you watch them!

Scrapbook Shopping Report: Michaels March/April 2015

Yes, I’m the annoying shopper taking photos every time I’m in Michaels and I see something new ;) Problem is, I haven’t come home and shared these pics with you in a while – so here’s some catch-up.

I give you … “New” items I’ve seen at Michaels in March and April 2015:

Heidi Swapp and Recollections embellishments

IMG_0118

A cute little plastic shoebox with an “it’s raining” theme – and on clearance! This is the type of box I use for my Project Life card storage.

IMG_0115

Kinda’ like the coughcoughBORINGcoughcough new crafts section at Target, Mike’s has some DIY stuff, basics in lots of colors

IMG_0114

Cheapie bins of super cute enamel dots . . .

IMG_0057

label stickers . . .

IMG_0058

IMG_0117

Tabbed index cards by Recollections, great for organizing photos or Project Life cards

IMG_0116

Hey, I think someone asked me a long time ago where I got the scrapbook page display thingee in my office. I forgot to answer but when I saw these at Michaels, I remembered that I forgot. So sorry, whoever that was! Yep, I got it at Michaels and they still have ’em.

IMG_0243_2

Over in the home deco section, there was also some cute new stuff –

IMG_0120

IMG_0119

So that’s what’s what at Michaels these days.

Further down in the same mall, there’s a Bev Mo (do you have these where you live? I call them “college students’ heaven” stores). I’m driving along and got a little bit twitterpated – CRAFT EVENT! – before I realized, “Duh. It’s Bev Mo. Must mean craft beer.” Bummer, dude. Really harshed my mellow.

IMG_0063

So I went in, got some Grey Goose, and it was all good.

HAPPY SHOPPING!

Team Lisa Bearnson

I’m Erika Friday, a proud member of Team Lisa! This means that I’m a consultant for the following companies:

Youngevity
– Heritage Makers
– Our Memories for Life
– Anthology by Lisa Bearnson

image

If you clicked on Team Lisa solely because you’re interested in buying her Anthology products: Please sign up HERE as a Preferred Customer (top right, Join, Customer). When her products are released in late summer 2015, you’ll be ready to purchase :) And you’ll get everything you buy at WHOLESALE price!

If you’re curious about the other scrapbooking products, the big picture, the business opportunity, the health-related products, etc., please keep reading!

Youngevity, Heritage Makers, and Our Memories for Life have been around for a while (Youngevity for 18 years) but Team Lisa has recently been formed under the Youngevity umbrella to market and sell Lisa Bearnson’s “Anthology” products. Lisa’s products will be released in Late Summer 2015 and she’s forming Team Lisa as her “downline” – which is what I’m part of. And you can be too, as either a preferred customer or a ‘consultant’; both include a 30% discount on Lisa’s products.

As I’m learning about Youngevity et al, I’m thinking “it’s a LOT!” LOL There’s so much to take in. Granted, I joined Youngevity to be on Team Lisa and sell her Anthology products. But what I’m finding is that Youngevity has a lot of other things to offer and I’m trying to understand it all. Whoa.

So … sort of selfishly, I’ve started this page on my site to keep all of the things I learn and links I need in one place. And I figure it can be a great resource for any other scrappers who join my team in the future, or anyone who has questions about it.

THE BASICS

Youngevity is the umbrella over everything. It’s like an online shopping mall with tons of fun products geared toward living a healthy lifestyle:

Coffeeeee! Including K-cups! {I *knew* I loved this company!}
Energy drinks, sports drinks, and waters
Aromatherapy essential oils
Healthy food including bakery, beverages, breakfasts, entrees, snacks, soups, paks, and greenfed dairy
Haircare
Health paks
Health supplements
Healthy chocolate (say whaaaat?)
Home and garden
Mineral make-up (this brand doesn’t have the ingredient* that caused the breakouts I got with Bare Minerals, yes!)
Pet products
Spa & personal care
Weight management

*Bismuth clogged my pores and caused breakouts :(

Then of course there are the scrapbooking products, both digital and paper:

Heritage Makers: Digital scrapbooking, business supplies, photo gifts, etc.

Our Memories for Life: Paper scrapbooking products like strap-hinge albums and refills, tape runners, multi-purpose tool, paper packs, etc. Creative Memories co-founder Rhonda Anderson has brought some of her products to HM so they’re very similar to CM.

Youtube 07-10-15: Lisa Bearnson talks about how she came to have a product line with Youngevity and why she believes in their other products as well.

Scrapbook Shopping: What’s Up with Your Scrapbook Supplies, Target?

I don’t think any of us DEPEND on Target for scrapbook supplies but mine carries enough to keep me interested. I check the scrapbooking section each time I’m there. About every 10 Target trips, I get lucky – there’s something new and cute and the price is good.

I do depend on Target for filling in my stash of WRMK 12×12 D-ring albums. They carry the 2 main colors I use: kiwi green and turquoise. And at $20 per album, Target has them for about $10 cheaper than everyone else.

Or should I used the past tense: “carried” and “had”?

The first sign of twubble was noticing over the last several months that the WRMK albums weren’t being replenished. Then seeing them on the clearance endcaps for $6.

My first thought was: SCORE!
My second thought was: Ruh Roh.

Between my 2 local Targets, I managed to buy 2 kiwi, 2 turquoise, and 2 pink WRMK albums for $6 each. But I had a feeling that was going to be a bittersweet deal :(

A week later, I went to check the Target scrapbook section (which had shrunk to a pretty small section, in my main store) and found this:

IMG_0205

In an adjacent aisle was this – what looks like a new “DIY craft” section:

IMG_0284

IMG_0289

There are new wooden letters, paints, flowers, yarn, ribbons, paintbrushes, alpha stamps, etc.

IMG_0286

This is now what I suppose you would call The Scrapbook Aisle – generic paper pads and some straggler scrapbook paper pads:

IMG_0287

So, Target, what’s going on with your scrapbook supplies? Are they being discontinued or what? This in the same month that I hear another California LSS is closing down: Scrapbook Territory in Berkeley.

Sigh.

I guess there are no more scrappers, just DIY crafters who want super basic supplies to create painted wood letters and painted milk bottles and painted stencils.

On a bright note, I was in today (the day after Easter) and noticed all this cute Easter washi tape being taken off display, I presume headed for the clearance section?

IMG_0288

In the larger Target here, I did notice a great selection of art …

IMG_0248

… and a more department store look in the housewares section.

IMG_0249

And they had a tote that only an Old School Scrapper could appreciate for its true value:

IMG_0246

Hey, I gotta’ take small bits of happy where I can find it, okay?

Goodbye Target scrapbooking section! It was fun all these years while it lasted. Sniffle.

Has this change happened at your Target, too? What are your thoughts?

Announcement: I’m on “Team Lisa” … As in Lisa Bearnson!!

Scrapbook Event Review: “Play All Day” by Embellish IT! Inc.

In early February 2015, I attended a very fun scrapbooking event called “Play All Day” put on by Shelby at Embellish IT! Inc. I wanted to give you a review and share my day :)

BACKGROUND

I’ve shopped at Embellish It over the years for scrapbook supplies. They carry a lot of products from 2 of my favorite brands: Basic Grey and Simple Stories, and lots of others, too. But the best thing they have are packs of Bazzill cardstock with colors selected to match specific scrapbook product lines. It’s pretty dang cool, especially for Bazzill snob like myself :P

For instance, THIS pack of Bazill . . .

. . . coordinates with THIS line, Carta Bella “Hello Again”

So, I’m on the mailing list for Embellish It and have heard about their “Play All Day” events for years – always wanted to go. I decided to finally pull the trigger when I saw an event that was only 3 hours from me (yes, I live in the boonies; NOTHING is held close by) and it was close to my mom’s birthday. She’s also a scrapbooker so I thought it would be a fun way to celebrate.

Wait! Was this one of those “Oh, look what I got you (for me)!” type of gifts? Hmmm… Anyhoo, we signed up with an Early Bird coupon code that saved us $9 off the $79 price, made our hotel reservation with a special rate at the event hotel ($99 at a Sheraton), . . . and had to wait for several months, LOL. But, yes, the day finally did arrive!

THE PLAN

A few days prior to the event, we got an e-mail detailing the day:

*9am – midnight*
This will be a FUN day of scrapbooking & we will keep things low key.
* The event will officially end at 9pm BUT we have the room reserved until
midnight. Those who wish to continue scrapping are welcome to do so at *no
additional cost*

*The schedule for the day will be:*
*9am- Doors open *(i always try to open the door a little early but it is
all dependent on the hotel)
*11-1: Class #1 Layouts* – 2 double-page layouts
*1pm: Italian Buffet Lunch*
*3-5pm: Class #2 Cards* – 8 cards w/embellishments

I was excited about the layout class since scrappin’ is what I do (as opposed to project classes like banners, home dec, etc. that I’m not as interested in). I’m not a cardmaker so that was ‘meh’ but I figured I could make my mom’s birthday card, LOL!

THE BIG DAY

On the day of the event, I woke up at 4:45am (so excited! couldn’t sleep!), left the house at 6:30 in pouring rain, got there around 9:30am, got unloaded and unpacked, changed into dry clothes, and met my mom in the event room by 10:30. So I was bummed to miss out on that 1 1/2 to 2 hours of scrapping time before the first class but oh well. My mom had already met and been chatting with the nice ladies at our table for 4 and the ones at the next table, who were all friends.

Okay, I’m going to confess right now that I don’t have any photos to share of the day. I did have my phone aka my BFF. I guess I just felt awkward taking pics in that close of an environment with a roomful of people I didn’t know. Sorry! I’ll do such a good job of providing vivid descriptions with my words that you won’t miss the photos, LOL.

Back to the event . . .

CROP SPACE

It was basically a ballroom or huge conference room and it was pretty full. Regarding the tables, I don’t know the measurements but there was plenty of room to scrap for the day, complete the class layouts, etc. If I were at a retreat, I’d probably want a little more room but it was fine for Play All Day.

SHOPPING AT THE EVENT

At the front of the event room, there were tables with lots of collection kits, Bazzill packs (!), page kits, mini album kits, card kits, etc. I didn’t have time to shop before the first class began at 11:00 but was able to later. That was actually by design because I didn’t bring any paper to scrap with, knowing that Shelby would have plenty of paper for sale. I bought 2 collection kits and a Bazzill kit.

WHAT I PACKED

This was the lightest I’d traveled to a scrapbooking event in quite a while! Only 2 bags and here is what I brought:

– Tool kit in flat pack with adhesives, photo cleaning cloth, erasers, Undu, etc.

– Tool tote with pens, scissors, stapler, and other tools

– Photos, about 15 from 3 events. I had just printed them the morning of the event, of course, ha!

– Paper trimmer, my trusty old Cutterpede that I’ve had for years (that’s why she’s not that pretty but I love her!).

Things I always keep in my crop bag:
– Ott lite & extension cord
– Extra blade and cutting pad for Cutterpede

THE FOOD

The Italian buffet lunch was delish. Iced tea and coffee were provided throughout the event (although the hot coffee ran out and wasn’t replaced in the evening, when I really needed it, lol). We just ate snacks the rest of the time. I was there to scrap, baby!

SHOPPING NOT AT THE EVENT

I wrote a post about my little shopping adventure HERE.

CLASSES & PRODUCT

Remember how I said I was kinda’ ‘meh’ about doing the card class? Well, I lucked out. Majorly. It turned out that Shelby had just received new kits to do a Simple Stories “Life Documented” mini album or planner. So she offered us the option to do that instead of the card kit and most of us took her up on that. Duh. The value was crazy. The entire event cost $70 and that Simple Stories kit had probably $50 worth of product in it.

There was also the layout class and I enjoyed both of them. Shelby walked around the room, gave instructions and encouragement, but it was pretty relaxed. There were great instructions you could follow at your own pace, too. I’ve been to some classes that are so stressful that they’re not even fun but this wasn’t like that.

THE HOSTESS

Shelby is a dynamo. She had the loud voice needed to keep us rowdy scrappers in line (ha), was very upbeat and fun over the course of a long day, was organized, and what I loved most – very open and flexible. She asked several times what WE wanted to do (when to eat, the room temp, okay to substitute the planner project for the cards, etc.). I also chatted with her one-on-one and found her lovely. We had some “mom talk” and it was nice. Speaking of which, she had the cutest helper EVER, her little blondie cutie pie son. What a great sport he was!

SUMMARY

I’d give it 10/10 stars. I can’t think of anything that went wrong or that I didn’t like. I mean it was over a month ago and I’m old so there’s a possibility I forgot something but, no, I don’t think so. I’m not THAT old! If you get the chance to attend a Play All Day event, I recommend it!

Online Scrapbook Classes: Creative Live Has Scrapbooking Classes ON SALE

One of my favorite sources of online learning – CREATIVE LIVE – has scrapbooking-related classes from their Craft & Maker series on sale RIGHT HERE to celebrate National Craft Month.

creative live scrapbooking on sale

Up to 40% off from March 16 – 22, 2015!

Several of them are digital scrapbooking-related which isn’t my groove but maybe it’s yours, or you want to learn more about it. I will say that one of the digi instructors, Traci Reed, is a great teacher. I’ve taken classes from her during TRUE SCRAP events, like her class for TRUE SCRAP: POCKET PAGES

If you’re more of a traditional (aka paper) scrapbooker like me, you might want to check out these sale classes:

Becky Higgins – Scrapbooking with Project Life
Lain Ehmann – Scrapbook Your Story
Nicole Samuels – Scrapbooking Your Baby’s First Year
Megan Hoeppner – From App to Archive: Social Media Scrapbooking

I’ve taken all of these online classes when they were in free preview mode and LOVED each one! Creative Live does a high-class job and the instructors are at the top of their game, sharing loads of information, giving real life examples from themselves and live audience members, and the classes are nice and long – totally worth the cost, especially with the discount pricing right now.

I think my favorite of the 4 classes above was Becky’s. Yes, I’m biased right now toward Project Life style/pocket page scrapbooking but that wasn’t it; it was how open Becky was about her history in the scrapbooking industry, the behind-the-scenes stories about the business end of PL, how lines are created, how she uses PL in her real life, and how emotional and honest she got – even to the point of tears at times. I can’t say I learned a TON of new things about Project Life but I learned more about Becky and scrapbooking in general that made me love both of them even more (is that frickin’ possible??!?! LOL).

Because these classes are nice and long, any of them would be great to be like your Scrapbooking TV, playing during your scrap sessions :) They don’t run sales that often so I’m happy to see this. Hope you find something you like!
